How it works

The Poets Stage is an online venue for performance poetry competition.

Contestants submit a recording of their performance which is judged by two select judges and audience vote.

The Artist Profile: Each contestant submits required information for their profile which is hosted on the website. The profile contains: a photo, short bio, link to their website or author page, introduction to their poem and a link to the performance.

Winners: The contest runs through two eliminations (depending upon number of entries) with three final winners; 1st Place $150- 2nd Place $100- 3rd Place $50-.

Final round contestants may be invited to perform at special events as those opportunities become available.

Note: a minimum of 10 entries must be received by deadline for contest to proceed.

Judging: Judging is by the combination of two selected judges and the audience vote which equals three votes in each round: Judge A + Judge B + Audience vote C.

Judges A and B will post their criteria and the audience votes as they prefer.

All types of poetry are acceptable if you perform it.

Judging criteria include: literary qualities such as imagery, symbolisms, metaphors, rhyme, rhythm, sounds, anything that separates the work as poetry from average talk.

Performance qualities: Does it move me to shout with joy, fall down weeping, be angry at injustice, love deeper?

Basic Rules: See PDF, Official Rules 2021 for details.

Eligibility:

+ 18 years of age or completion of the Guardian Consent form.

+ Membership is NOT required in the groups CWG or RNC.

+ Chattanooga region resident: approximately 70 mile radius of Chattanooga. Exceptions are granted to members of CWG or RNC who may live further away.

Entry content

+ All submissions must comply with local and federal laws.

+ Language: racist, defamatory, slander, or speech harmful to others is prohibited. This website will post a PG, Parental Guidance, rating. All written and oral content, clothing, and dance, should be respectful of human dignity. Chattown Stages reserves the right to not accept entries that violate these standards.

+ Each entry consists of a video recording of their performance of their poem, submitted to the Artist profile. This is not a video production contest so most recordings are acceptable.

+ The contestant must perform their own original work, solo, with no musical instruments, no recorded back tracks, no background music of any kind except what comes from the body of the performer.

+ 100% of the submission must be the original work of the contestant.
