Denise Adeniyi, aka The Divine Poetess
Denise is a native born Chattanoogan involved in the musical community from an early age when she first started singing in church choirs at the age of five, and performed music locally. During her college career, her repertoire include performances such as Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha with a leading role as “Lucy”. She is a third generation R. Nathaniel Dett student where she studied privately under the direction of Roland Carter at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Denise has traveled to several countries on music tours such as Germany, France, Switzerland, Nigeria, Kenya, Canada, Prague, Vienna and Budapest, where she conducted in St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, St. Stephens Church in Vienna, Austria’s Barnabitenkirche and lectured musically at Daystar University in Nairobi Kenya. She had the wonderful opportunity to dance with the Masai Tribe while in Nairobi Kenya. Denise has conducted undergraduate, graduate, and master chorale choirs at UTC. She has also guest conducted with the Chattanooga Choral Society and an Australian Symphony. Presently, Denise is an independent artist with her own band as well as poetess. She is a member of West African Band “Ogya” of Ghana. She has performed at local venues such as Riverbend, Nightfall, Bonnaroo, Kuumba Festival, and other international festivals at surrounding universities. Denise obtained an undergraduate degree in vocal music education, and a masters in music with a concentration in conducting at UTC.
Her professional memberships include: the American Choral Directors Association, Golden Key International Society, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Sorority, and “Desert Storm” Veteran of United States Army.
